DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Masters Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance 2024/2025

The DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Masters Scholarships are designed to support highly qualified graduates from developing countries who wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Good Governance at selected German universities. In today’s interconnected world, effective public policy and governance are crucial for addressing complex global challenges. Recognizing the importance of cultivating future leaders in this field, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers the Helmut-Schmidt Masters Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance.

This prestigious scholarship program empowers outstanding individuals from developing countries to pursue advanced studies in Germany, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to drive positive change in their home countries and beyond. The program aims to foster academic excellence, intercultural exchange, and professional development among future leaders in the field of public policy and governance.

The DAAD Helmut-Schmidt scholarship holders enjoy a tuition fee exemption, a health insurance plan, travel allowance, study and research allowance and subsidiaries for spouse and/or children where applicable. Beneficiaries will receive a mandatory 6 months German language course prior to their study program.

Criteria for application for the DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Masters Scholarships

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in the field of social and political sciences, law, economics, public policy and administration from an accredited institution and are willing to actively contribute to the social, political and economic development of their home countries. Applicants must have a minimum of two years of professional experience in a relevant field and demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership potential.

Applications are open to nationals from Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, Western, Central, South-eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and South Caucasus and the Middle East and North Africa. It is important for applicants to be proficient in the English or German language, depending on the language of instruction of the chosen Master’s program.

The scholarships are awarded for selected Master courses at the following German universities:
•   Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg: Social Protection.
•  University of Duisburg-Essen: Development and Governance.
•  Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt: Public Policy.
•  Universität Magdeburg: Peace and Conflict Studies.
•  Hochschule Osnabrück: Management in Non-Profit Organisations.
•  Universität Passau: Development Studies.
•  University of Passau: Governance and Public Policy.

Application process

Applicants are to submit their applications for the selected master`s courses and for the DAAD scholarship to the respective universities only and indicate that they are applying for the DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Programme. The application period for all the participating universities is from 1st June to 31st July 2024.
